Trouble setting up Google Checkout
August 30, 2007, 02:11:39 pm
Using CivicCRM 1.8 / Joomla.

Set up everything in Google Checkout, except the report back API which Google lists as optional, and we don't need since we are small enough to handle accounting, etc., manually.

Set up the payment page in CiviCRM and configured CiviContribute with our Merchant ID, Key, and Google generated button URL.

Page displays fine, but Google Checkout button takes the user to google.com's front page (search), not to Google checkout.

The "Site URL" field in com_civicrm/civicrm/admin/paymentProcessor is still set to https://checkout.google.com/.

What am I missing?  The docs for configuring Google Checkout utterly confuse me.

Could you provide us the "Button URL", you are using for your setting.

I guess something is wrong with the "button URL".

The Button URL should be in the following format:

If using Test account,
Quote
http://sandbox.google.com/checkout/buttons/checkout.gif?merchant_id=1234567890&w=180&h=46&style=white&variant=text&loc=en_US

If Live account,
Quote
http://checkout.google.com/buttons/checkout.gif?merchant_id=1234567890&w=180&h=46&style=white&variant=text&loc=en_US

I agree docs refers some old field names, which might be causing the confusion. I'll change it right away.

Button URL (cut & pasted into CiviCRM from Google Checkout generator)

https://checkout.google.com/buttons/checkout.gif?merchant_id=[number]&w=180&h=46&style=white&variant=text&loc=en_US

Button URL seems to be correct.

I tried replicating the problem on demo. But it worked fine.

Check your settings / credentials again.

Thanks for looking into it for me.

I've checked and triple checked all the settings in the CiviCRM setup, and even re-entered them from scratch.  I think it must be a peculiarity of the shared hosting environment.  This installation is for a small local campaign, so we can move processing to a third-party provider, and manually update the contributions as "offline" donations.

If it recurs on the next installation, then I'll try to track it down.

I've had this problem on every install of CiviContribute that we've used. Thus far we'd had the option of going to Act Blue instead, which is what we did. But now I am working with some local candidates, and Act Blue isn't available to them.

We have everything set as far as I can see. And the button we're using does have our merchant number in it. But time and time again it kicks us to the front page of Google instead.

J:

Would be great if you could track this down. Alternatively can u reproduce this on demo with your sandbox google credentials and we'll try to debug/fix it

I did a test item over at the sandbox. And it too is going to the main Google page. I'm not sure if I should link to the page here, so I'll see if I can PM it to you.

1. can u please enter your sandbox credentials. i deleted your live credentials.

2. for live, you need to also use an https certificate from a list of "certified" providers. check:

http://groups.google.com/group/google-checkout-developers-forum/web/google-checkout-and-ssl-certificates

on demo, we use a self generated certificate and hence a live transaction will probably not work

The part about having to have a SSL certificate from a certain place is definitely something that needs to be added to the set up instructions for Google Checkout.

Also, the instructions need to be updated to show that the link to the API has to be a https:// address as well.

That's probably why many of us are running into this problem - we didn't know we needed a SSL certificate since we're not passing any credit card information through.

Before we try switching to Paypal instead, I should ask--

Does it need SSL as well? We'd like to not have to use SSL since this is a small local campaign, and spending a bunch of money on a SSL certificate when no credit card info is being transferred is something they aren't going to do.

paypal standard does not need an SSL certificate.  Paypal Webpayments pro does need an SSL certificate since folks enter credit card info on the site itself

I can update it, but it's terribly outdated - it's for version 1.7. I'm not sure I've got all the steps down enough to be able to update the directions properly. But I can add that blurb.

Would be great if you could update it as much as possible including some/all 1.8 changes. Such contributions help us significanly, is much appreciated AND keeps the documentation a bit more relevant

Thanx for spending time and energy on this
