Board for Local Groups (in particular New York City area)
February 09, 2010, 08:34:50 pm
Hi,

At the New York CiviCRM meetup at Rayogram this evening someone (yes me...  ;)) brought up the idea of having a place to communicate freely between meetings and possibly even arrange a barcamp or unconference style event.

It was suggested that a subgroup on this board might be a good way to start and it would be especially good if someone would volunteer to moderate that.

So I'm here.

I'm going to ask some other NY folks to chime in here with their support.

So can we create a main board called "User Groups", then create "Child Boards" for any regional group that has critical mass to want one?

Can "Child Boards" have independent moderators or only main groups?

Let me know how we can proceed.  Hoping to keep the NYC momentum going with free communications between events and possible a place for planning a NYC CiviCRM barcamp.

+1 great idea!  Really enjoy the meetups!

Would the forum allow for a distribution list, like the drupal group?  could we use a drupal group?

Thanks for getting us started Peter!  Your point last night that the meetup community is ephemeral was insightful.

Peter and I had a great discussion at the meetup last night about using the technologies that we were there to talk about to extend and connect the tangible community that was in the room.  Depending on how well this works, I think I get the blame or credit for suggesting the Civi Forums as an existing tool that might work for us.

In reference to Shawn's question, yes the SMF forum software allows you to subscribe to either a thread or an entire forum through it's Notify feature - there's a button at the top of each thread/board which applies to that context.  Notifications are managed in your profile.

With the help of the great folks at Circle Interactive (http://www.circle-interactive.co.uk/) we are working on a "groups" site for CiviCRM (similar to groups.drupal.org). we hope to launch this in the next few weeks or so.

We have two options now:

1. create a forum sub-group for NY for the short term
2. try to launch this earlier and let NY folks be the test group :)

any thoughts?

Awesome news about the groups site, Lobo, and thanks to Circle Interactive.  So let's not ask anyone to do work that later needs to be undone!!

I'm certainly happy to be part of at test group and would be very surprised if Peter doesn't feel the same.

Yes, most definitely!

I would only say let's check back in before the next New York meetup.  If at that point it is still "a few weeks away" perhaps we can reassess at that time.

I know how sometimes plans slip through no particular fault.

Totally looking forward to a civicrm group site!

Thanks very much, Peter. For those of us just getting started with CiviCRM, it would be a tremedous help to be able to communicate with others between meetings.

This is a great start!

Thanks for your efforts

I'd definitely be interested in a sort of location centric board. It's always a big help to talk face to face with other developers.

As for the discussion on a civi training day meetup that also took place... I may have a location we could swipe for a day for free, however it's kind of a hike. I'm from the Gettysburg, PA region, and it's out here.

Thanks for the offer!  I would guess that we'd want something close the geometric center of the members and southern PA is probably well outside that for the NYC meetup, but isn't there a Washington, D.C. meetup?  Your location could work for that - still not geo-centric but much closer than here.

we're 3.5 hours from nyc, 3 hours from dc, and 2.5 hours from philly. we're in this bermuda triangle of 'just out of reach' of everything interesting. :P

I would say that we're definitely in the market for a location we can have a Civicamp in NYC area though.  I think we'd want something reasonably accessible from the 5 boroughs of NYC and surrounding counties though.

Anyone have a spot?

For a first go two rooms that can hold 30 or 40.  Either display device in each or maybe that could be borrowed.  Free or cheap.  Most of the rest can be figured out later.

Hey New Yorkers.

There's been a UK forum board (http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/board,34.0.html) for about a year now.  It is a little known backwater of CiviCRM :) and I've been hoping to upgrade it to better cater for local groups for a while.

At our most recent UK meetup we had a conversation (that we've had before) that sounds very similar to the one that you had at your meet up.  The difference being that this time Dave @ Circle took the initiative and has set up a prototype, which is fantastic.  So it looks like in the UK we'll be moving from the forum board to the new groups functionality.  The functionality is based on the UK experience so far, but the idea is to make it generally useful and accessible so it is fantastic news that the folks in New York are also up for this.

We also discussed this at the European developer camp early last week.  Some comments from that discussion here: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,12207.0.html

There is a wiki page here: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Community+directory+and+local+organising that might be a good place to further discuss the prototype...

Awesome news.  I've commented on that wiki.  Happy to jump in and be a beta tester for the NYC group.

And count me on on being a tester for the prototype!  i'll check out the wiki...
Also I know that the civi core team has gazillions of things on their plate right now, but I'd like to give an update for our next NYC CiviCRM meetup on March 16th (http://civicrm.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=46) about the status of the prototype.

thanks!
