Integration with Joomla 1.6
June 09, 2010, 05:55:07 pm
Are there any plans to more tightly integrate with Joomla 1.6's new ACL controls?

to a large extent this depends on the civicrm / joomla developer community. If joomla folks are interested in this, they need to step up and help develop this functionality (and if not a developer, help sponsor a developer to do so)

I can't speak for the core team, but I know 1) they have it on their radar screen; 2) they generally are not interested in sinking hours into something like that until the code is stable; and 3) getting some sponsorship support is a surefire way to ensure movement on things.

In the past I've found it hard to "solicit support" for features where we actually get people stepping up to the plate to pledge dollars. But ACL is big enough, we may be able to get a critical mass to help the core team move forward with it.

I think that the ACL piece is going to be the most interesting part. Since civicrm acl in Joomla is basically starting from nothing, I think it makes sense to either say civicrm will use the acl from the joomla core or that when you make an acl group in civicrm it will get made in the joomla! ACl via a plugin probably.

Can anyone give a ballpark on what the developer-side costs would be if folks wanted to sponsor it?

if i had to take a guess based on the past, i suspect 20-30 hours. However this does not include ACL integration (which is not present in J1.5 either). We'll definitely have that as a make it happen for 3.4 (blog posts on this next week)

Thanks Lobo.  Ya a 'make it happen' would be great to give folks in the Joomla-CiviCRM community an better idea what we're looking at to get this done.

Hi,

I'm not sure why the discussion is "whether" there will be a Joomla 1.6 version of CiviCRM or not...  Joomla 1.6 will shortly be the standard, since its RC is due within a week.  The question is, who will be doing the work and how long will it take?  If the J1.6 compat version is not quickly available, it will severely damage the credibility of this awesome project.

Joomla 1.6 will be supported in CiviCRM 4.0. Its a bit hard to plan/schedule support for the major CMS releases since their beta cycle have gone on for 12+ months (in which time we've had at least 2 releases :)

I think Joomla/CiviCRM developers and users will need to step up and contribute code / resources if they are interested in tighter integration (like permissioning / user registration etc). We get quite a few patches from the drupal developer community (including most of the D7 port of CiviCRM) which makes things a lot easier and enables that integration to flourish a lot more, IMO

The make it happen (http://civicrm.org/contribute) for CiviCRM Permissioning in Joomla for 3.4 / 4.0 is here:

http://civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=14

We plan on announcing all the 3.4 projects in the next few days

Correct me if i am wrong, but this Make it Happen doesn't allow for memberships to dictate which Joomla Group the user belongs to?  The descriptions listed seem very CiviCRM focused and do not mention how this will actually integrate with Joomla's ACL, in turn restricting access to pages and content.  If you can clarify, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Curtis

The current make-it-happen is currently focussed mainly on exposing more granular civicrm permissioning within Joomla. it does not attempt to address  restricting access to content etc. We do hope that similar to drupal, this can be done via third party modules/components

Hello Lobo,

Thank you for getting back to me and clarifying the scope of this project.

I have talked with the JFusion team and they have already had a request to include CiviCRM.  There answer is here:  http://www.jfusion.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2333&p=12839&hilit=civicrm#p12839

I am not a developer, but your joomla user-base would explode if the core created the plugin needed.  Please consider this.

Thanks,

Curtis

I think our current focus is to get more people from the joomla side to contribute code, documentation, forum help and/or $$$ to help improve the joomla <-> civi integration.

As an open source project that links with other open source projects (drupal, joomla), we do hope to draw developers and users from those ecosystems. Our Joomla ACL Make it Happen is an experiment in that direction to see if the joomla community wants and is willing to support the product. If you have not already contributed, i strongly urge you to make a generous contribution to make that project happen so we can see the user - base explode :)

For those checking this post, here is the link to MAKE IT HAPPEN

Not a developer ? Be part of this community and give money instead:

http://civicrm.org/mih

Scroll down to CiviCRM Permissioning Integration with Joomla 1.6 ACL

If 300 joomla users give as little as $10, off we go!

At time of writing, funds are at 34%, the Joomla 1.6 release candidate is up and running, and I have given up on getting joomla 1.5 and civicrm working together - the problem - ACL and permissions!

Roll on joomla 1.6 and a sweet marriage to civicrm
