Erratic behavior on Membership renewals after upgrading
July 16, 2010, 07:42:07 am
We recently upgraded to 3.1.5 and have noticed that while new memberships seem to be working fine, renewals are not (at least not usually, once in a while they do).

The Membership Start Date is often blank/missing, and the Membership End Date is often set to "November 29, 2000" for some inexplicable reason. This also causes the user to be set to "Expired" and via the Drupal sync module, their access to the site is denied even though they have just renewed. I believe they are also getting renewal reminder notices.

Anybody have any idea why this could be? I looked in the error logs and don't see anything that seems to relate.

Might be a bug in CiviCRM so can you please provide exact steps to replicate this issue.

Thanks,
Kurund

Thanks, Kurund,
We haven't been able to reliably predict what causes it. Could it be a timeout issue of some kind? The site admin tells me that Civi is running markedly slower after the upgrade. Is that expected behavior?

Nope, upgrade should not slow your CiviCRM. Can you make sure your resource url etc are correct. Also you might want to check your access logs and investigate why CiviCRM is slow.

Hmm... well, the access logs had some "undefined index" errors related to some membership types that were disabled, but I don't think that's related. I reenabled those membership types for now.

I did another renewal test and again the membership Start Date is erased completely, and the End Date is set to November 29th, 2000. There weren't any errors in the error log, and the access log seems to be clear too (excerpt pasted below).

I will investigate if the "debug" options can help me out on this, I'm at a loss....

Can you give details of the membership ( start date, end date, join date, status ) that was expired and again same details after renewing.

I am having the same problems, it looks like people renewing from an expired membership are given an end date of Nov 11 2000...

I manually reset all fields (member since, start date, end date) on a test user and then renewed -- and none of them changed. It took the contribution and that shows up in my dashboard, but this time no membership information changed at all. I'll see if I can get the earlier issue to happen again, perhaps on a user that I don't manually reset the dates for. I assume this current issue of not changing the dates at all is related, though.

Hi,
You might want to integrate this patch : http://fisheye2.atlassian.com/changelog/CiviCRM?cs=28866
and let us know if it works for your install.

Thanks,
Ashwini

Ashwini, your patch didn't seem to work perfectly, but I notice the bug report is marked as "fixed" -- how can we get those "official" updated files to test it on our server?

can you elaborate a bit more on what part of the patch worked and what did not so we can go back and check and fix.

you might want to comment on the issue directly: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-6531

so we can track it there

Sure, I was hoping to test some official files since I input the changes by hand and can't rule out my own error, but I'm told that some recent new memberships aren't recording contributions or memberships now. Haven't fully tested the renewal side of things.

I'm having the exact same behavior on renewals, (Not Good).  We recently migrated from Joomla/AEC to Drupal/CiviCRM and have been having a lot of issues.  This one being the latest.  Can anyone confirm that this bug has been fixed in the latest version of CiviCRM (3.2)?
