Give Us Feedback on 1.8 Feature Candidates
April 21, 2007, 11:35:19 pm
Folks,
We've compiled a list of "candidate" (i.e. possible) features for 1.8 based primarily on requests that have come in from the community. Pending any unexpected surprises, we are targeting two larger items for 1.8:

  • Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Dedupe+-+Phase+One

  • CiviReport Phase 1

We would like some feedback from folks about the remaining items on the list at:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviCRM+v1.8

  • Which 1-3 items are your top priority?
  • Which item(s) would you be willing and able to contribute resources to help out with?
  • Any items you think are a "bad idea"?

You can add your comments to the wiki page - or post to this forum topic.

I think this is a good start on Phase 1.  This is a very similar approach to what we wanted and specified in our Membership management specification.  IN that, we had asked that upon signup / registration, that the system check for similar records and present those to the user before creating a new one.  The user story is something to the effect of:

The system wants to make sure that the new record is not a duplicate of an existing one.  Therefore, it will locate records that look similar and present those to the user. The user can select one of those records that is current and then update it.

Sounds like this "similar record" check could be implemented by Phase 1 of this dup engine?

My top three would be:

(Yes I know these two are pushed out to 2.0, but I would like to request them sooner!)
1. Allow user to compose email & text messages on screen rather than upload files [CRM-1167]

2. preferably with nice AJaX interface that allows them to drag and drop tokens from a list of possibilities [CRM-1168]

3. Add "Previous" and "Next" navigation links to the contact detail screens when accessing from a group/search results set. This makes it easy to browse through the contacts in a particular set.

Does the hcalendar format make a calendar based view of events any easier?  Such a view is very important to us.  We will use our new site to decentralize event and space management from the Parish Admin.'s wall calendar to the web.  It's much easier for members and staff to check dates and times via a calendar view.

from the hCalendar wikipedia page:

hCalendar format is a 1:1 representation of the aforementioned iCalendar standard, in semantic XHTML.

So its more a display rather than publishing standard. We publish events using the iCalendar standard. We hope to move to displaying events using hCalendar in the next release or so in places where it makes sense

CiviMember - One-click offline membership renewal (with option to create contribution record automatically and send receipt/confirmation)

Understand that this has been pushed out to v2.0 but I'd really like to see this by August...

Henry:

Sorry about pushing that off to a 2.x release. We'd like 1.8 to be stable for 6 months or so, and would like to avoid major changes to the code. Hence we are pushing a lot of features to 2.x. We also are planning to make the 1.8 development cycle much shorter than normal (4 weeks only)

If the below is essential to your organization, please do consider hiring a developer to do so. We'd be happy to coordinate this. 1.8 will have code contributed by other folks (price sets) and we are starting to get better at this :)

The current release (1.7) includes an iCal "feed" which you MAY be able to "subscribe" to from the Drupal Calendar module. I'm just playing with it now using the info here: http://drupal.org/node/120710 . I haven't quite figured out how to link the calendar to a CiviEvent ical URL though. I'll let you know if I have success - you may also want to try this out :-)

Well, we're a Joomla site.  ;) There are several calendar modules - I'm exploring if any might form a front end for CiviEvent in a similar way.

Your two main items are exactly what we need, thanks.

    * CiviReport Phase 1

Lucy:

If you are interested in deploying CiviReport please let us know asap. We could use a few organizations to help us with the process. The first phase of CiviReport is pretty independent of CiviCRM (we'll have a lot of sample reports for folks to get started on etc).

You can read more about CiviReport here: http://civicrm.org/CiviReport/

The software requirements are a bit high, but not too bad with current package management tools :)

This would be a big time saver!  This was the first feature request I received from our coordinator when giving a walk-through of the CiviCRM workflow for his common tasks.

The de-dupe feature will be a great time-saver for us. The already existing function to recognize duplicates is good, but some way to manually merge records later on would be great.

The first cut of de-dupe is on the 1.8 branch already, and you’ll be able to test it as soon as we put up a 1.8.alpha sandbox (hopefully next week or so).
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

This is looking soooo good. My top three:

1. CRM-1942 Support for "Employer" field in Individual profiles (hard-coded ACR as in our built-in Add/Edit Individual form)  !!!! I am beyond excited for this one.

2. CRM-1941 Profile create/edit forms - Settings option to send notification email to one or more email addresses when a contact record is created or updated via that profile.

3. Introduce "Pay Later" option for CiviContribute and CiviEvent. *This is postponed to 2.0, but I'd love to see it brought in if possible....I assume this will also apply to CiviMember?? Not listed above.

I also just wanted to add that I am really interested in some kind of "default" header/footer text options for CiviEvent (for registration, confirmation, and thank yous) similarly to how you have set it up for CiviMail. Many of these options never change (at least for my orgs), and it would be extremely beneficial to have a "use default" check box or something. Any chance of squeezing this in for 2.0 ?

Thanks,
Emily
