Car Salesman (not dealership) CRM
November 09, 2007, 09:19:37 am
Hi,
I have been running a wordpress blog for my personal customers for over a year now. What I would like to do is something similar (very similar) to a dealership website. As time progresses, I want to join 3 communities together. The 3 are, 1. My Personal Customers (vehicle recalls, maintainance tips, newsletters, specials on vehicles, lead collection, etc), 2. A Car Loan site that provides car loan information as well as collects car loan leads for me to sell cars to, and 3. An auto auction site for our community and dealers, where I can charge a small fee for listings.

I want to keep up with the entire lifecycle for my customers I sold cars to, but this can be very basic. And I would like to accomplish the rest of this. It will happen on 3 different domains.

Any words of wisdom?

If you need more information on what CiviCRM does, you might try the demo:

Okay, I went to the demo link. I didn't get many of my questions answered due to the language. I read in english only. So can someone, maybe help me answer my questions here?

That's interesting, the demo shows in English for me.  Where are you located?

I see english and other languages mixed. I am in Georgia (the state). Is it a rule to answer forum questions in this manner? I am confused why someone simply will not type the answer instead of typing a link to get the answer. ???

The language is configurable and someone wanted to see the site in brazilian portugese and had switched the language. I've switched it back to english

You might want to consider hiring someone from http://civicrm.org/professional/. Your questions are quite generic to give any specific answers

- - I see Donald's Explanation for language - -
I can only speak for myself.  I've just begun my review of CiviCRM and CiviMail and I am not sure of the answer to your question, so I thought the demo might help you.  I probably did not get into the demo far enough to see the language issues, since I have my own copy installed (sort of).

Anyway, I thought your question was interesting.  The first part sounded like you wanted a blog or website and I did not see how this was related to CiviCRM and my first thought was I didn't see the connection.  But might be something that Drupal could handle, but again, I really don't know because I've only just installed Drupal because of CiviCRM.

Then in the second part of your question, I saw that you were tracking activities for your customers and CiviCRM might be a way to go.  I would suggest also looking at SugarCRM.

I've pretty much bugged the crap out of everyone in the forums with my questions, so far be it from me to not give the best answer I can.

If we could get critical mass of people interested, this post would be interesting re phone conference: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,1490.0.html

I'm not sure of your php / application skills - CiviCRM and CiviMail are not trivial to install - certainly the largest program set I've ever attempted.

I share your frustration, it is hard to quickly determine if an application is appropriate for your needs without spending lots of time.  Good luck.

I really appreciate the thought you put in to your post. I have looked into SugarCRM and have never been able to get it to work (probably the redundance of the file permissions combined with my laziness).

I tend to sway toward CiviCRM, as it is compatible with Drupal or Joomla. I suppose I will just install it and work with it until I need to hire someone.

I have several projects anyway, and will play with it on the least urgent project.

Thanks alot.

I'm pretty much at the same place as you, although you may be a head of me if you've used Drupal before.  While CiviCRM is by far the largest internet application that I've attempted and the first requiring php5, I do have the basic install with demo data running.

I'm coming from the perspective of email lists, so CiviMail is important.  You may wish to join the study group :  http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,1490.0.html

I can only speak for myself, but whatever interest I may have had in helping you use CiviCRM for your business (which seems like a poor fit from the start, given that it is designed for non profits) evaporated when you gave a sarcastic answer to Lobo.  You have no idea how much he gives to this project.

That's really all I have to say.

I thought your concept of life cycle tracking was interesting and that activist organizations like mine might benefit of thinking of contacts as a process and not just a static point in time profile.  Are you planning to try to install CiviCRM and CiviMail yourself or investigate one of the hosted solutions?

Well it seems that CiviCRM will not work for me (on this project), because it was created for non profits.

However, I have thought about maybe using it for my church. We sponsor several missionaries and I was thinking of putting a site together (well I am), and implementing CiviCRM.

I want the missionaries to be able to post to the site from where they are so people who visit the site can see the day to day lives of the missionaries. I'd like to have something in place where people can donate to the missions, and donate a small amount to help pay for the sites hosting.

I have installed wordpress at this site for now and am working on it part time. I have been on pause for a couple weeks now trying to decide what to do with Drupal. It is located at http://emmanuelonline.org if you'd like to look at.

But to answer your question (sorry I went on and on), I haven't looked into any hosted solutions due to funding. I am basically paying for it, for my church, since we do not have a budget for a website.

I hear you on the money side.  What requirements do you have in your for profit business that CiviCRM can't handle?  I'm asking because I think it is important for us to know the strengths and limitations of each tool that we use.

You might also wish to look at www.phplist.com - it is more of an email list manager, but other profile fields can be added.  phplist is not a trivial application either, but certainly an order of magnitude easier than CiviCRM / CiviMail.  You will see my questions over on their forum.

CiviCRM is pretty much of a monster to install and it is unclear yet if I will get all the functions of CiviMail to work in my shared hosting environment without a specific hosted solution. And once installed, I'm asking others for help in figuring what do do with CiviCRM.    On the other side, I've never seen an open source project of this magnitude with the fantastic level of training materials that CiviCRM has - certainly something unusual here.

Just a guess, but looks like the hosting and consulting environments may be pooling their efforts with CiviCRM - which might not be a bad business model.
