Black navigation area broken in Internet Explorer 8
December 26, 2010, 03:10:24 pm
After I upgraded a site from CiviCRM 3.2.3 to 3.3.1, the black navigation bar across the top is broken in Internet Explorer 7/8 only.     The text entry box with the magnifying glass is missing, and nothing happens when I click on any of the top menu items. None of the child menu items even display.

I am using the "BlueMarine" theme that ships with Drupal.  I have already cleared the browser cache with no luck.

 The Java script errors reported by Internet Explorer are below:

This is already fixed and will be part of 3.3.2 release. ( http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-7202 )

Thanks for reporting

I'm glad I found this thread, because I had the same problem.

I just upgraded to CiviCRM 3.3.2. I use Linux (Ubuntu 10.10) The black navigation area does not work with Firefox (Firefox/3.6.3) but works perfectly with Chrome (9.0.597.19 beta).

On my Mac (OS X, 10.5.8) Firefox (3.5.1) works well. Chrome (8.0.552.231) works fine.

Windows (only because my clients use it) IE8 and Firefox (3.6.6) work.

I have this problem also. I upgraded from 3.2.4 to 3.3.2. The menu bar works for me with Google Chrome 8.0.552.224 and Safari 5.0.1. It does not work with Firefox 3.6.13  or Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702. On another computer it works with Firefox 3.0.2.

Earlier I tried to upgrade to 3.3.1 and had the same problem. I checked http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-7202 and thought the problem was fixed in 3.3.2, so I backed out the upgrade and waited for 3.3.2.

I tried demo.civicrm.org and the problem does not exist there with my browsers.

I updated Firefox on my Acer from 3.0.2 to 3.6.13 and the navigation bar works on the Acer but not my laptop, both running the same versions of Firefox.

In addition, with Internet Explorer (8 on laptop and 7 on Acer), the theme is broken -- the CiviCRM pages display as one column of text and links. The Drupal pages are normal. I'm using the theme Garland.

A local person said to check for unclosed tags, that each browser responds to invalid HTML a little differently. I gave anonymous permission to access civicrm.

For http://test.nccommunities.org/civicrm:

validator.w3.org gives 48 Errors, 11 warning(s) including "Error Line 242, Column 9: end tag for "ul" which is not finished"

http://services.w3.org/tidy/tidy?docAddr=http%3A%2F%2Ftest.nccommunities.org%2Fcivicrm displays the page the same way IE does, with broken theme

I just installed 3.3.2 for the first time last night. I had a tough time going through the configuration checklist as it kept referring to the menu that did not work. I am using IE8 and getting the same error messages mentioned above. I tried from a different machine using FireFox and it worked fine. I tried from Safari on my iPad and it worked fine.

I searched for the error and came upon this thread. Like I say this is a brand new install on Drupal 6.20. All modules are up to date. I am kind of stuck until I can get this to work.

Anybody have any ideas?

For us, with 3.3.x versions ONLY on Drupal via Firefox, we have had to empty the browser cache, restart the browser, then the menu bar works as expected. We have never had to do this until the 3.3.x series versions. Maybe it will fix IE as well.  ???

Update.

Firefox works for me now. I didn't clear cache but I haven't looked at the page in quite a while and it probably cleared itself.

Internet Explorer 8 still doesn't work -- the navigation bar doesn't work and none of the themes work -- blocks display in one column. I deleted temporary files, history, cookies, saved passwords and web form information. Closed IE and reopened it. I tried all the Drupal themes.

The status bar displays "Error on page."

I use Firefox most of the time and don't need to use IE.

I'm seeing the same issue on IE8 only, with CiviCRM v3.3.3 - no search box and the black menu drop-downs aren't working.

However, they work on the demo.civicrm.org site - so I'm surmising that it's a conflict with some installed module.  I'm going to try disabling modules until I find which one it is - and if successful, I'll post my results here.

Disabling the Drupal 'Calendar' module brings the menu back.  Don't have a patch yet.

In another environment, I can leave Calendar enabled and get the menu to display properly after disabling:
  • admin menu
  • environment indicator
  • filefield

Re: Black navigation area broken in Internet Explorer 8

I upgraded Drupal to 6.20 and all my contributed modules to the latest versions. My whole Available Updates page is green. The CiviCRM navigation bar still doesn't work with Internet Explorer.

I tried disabling all contributed module except CiviCRM. The navigation bar works without any other contributed modules. I re-enabled a few at a time. The navigation bar is broken with:
admin menu
cck
FCKeditor
Views
Quote

Calendar, Notification and others need Views

Modules that work OK:
Front Page, System Information, Image, Image Gallery, Mass Contact, Return Path, Advance Help, Advanced Help Example, IMCE, Override node publishing options, Token, Catcha, Image Captcha, Google Analytics, jQuery UI

Is there a pattern here?

This is still my test site, but I want to upgrade my live site to 3.3 before starting conference registration.

We found one of the culprits was using rubik as the admin theme.  We switched to seven and much is better (though I have not tried re-enabling all the other modules).

Hope this helps.

Re: Black navigation area broken in Internet Explorer 8

I have the same problem as Fen. The issue appears to be a bug in the jsTree plugin. This section here in jquery.jstree.js (and minified version):

Quote
            if(tmp.styleSheet) {
               document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(tmp);
               tmp.styleSheet.cssText = opts.str;
            }
            else {
               tmp.appendChild(document.createTextNode(opts.str));
               document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(tmp);
            }
...sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I haven't figured out exactly what causes it to fail.

But if we rewrite the above javascript in jQuery, like so:

Quote
$('head').append('<style type="text/css">' + opts.str + '</style>');
...then it seems to work every time.

The first version appears to be using conditional javascript logic to target IE browsers and other browsers separately. The second version uses cross-browser jQuery logic to do it in one shot.

I think this solves the IE navigation menu problem. Fen and I also have a quick search box problem, which is caused by a conflict with Drupal Rubik theme. Switching themes solves that part.

This fix is not super elegant, partly because I don't totally understand how jsTree is used throughout CiviCRM so I tried to tinker as little as possible. But hopefully this serves as a proof of concept and a short-term solution. I tried to attach a patch but apparently the file size is too big.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I just upgraded a client to 3.3.5, and they are down because of this issue. Their IT department only allows IE 8.

Thanks,
James
