Issues and observations upgrading from CiviCRM 1.9 to 4.05
August 25, 2011, 03:11:09 pm
We are in the middle of upgrading from CiviCRM version 1.9 to CiviCRM 4.05 and Drupal 5 to Drupal 7.    This upgrade was probably beyond my expertise so Hershel Robinson at www.CiviHosting.com is doing the upgrade for us.  I'll report back with a recommendation on the following thread: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,8637.msg88969.html#msg88969

I thought it might be helpful for us to generally log our issues and observations, to remember, possibly help others and allow others to give us suggestions.

The actual conversion had some issues with the conversion programs, which we were afraid of and is why we sought help.  Fortunately, Hershel took care of these for us.

Now, we are testing - looking to see if things converted right and also learning version 4.0.5 instead of version 1.9.

I seem to be having problems getting the users menu choice and the report menu choice to show up for other than the main administrative user.

Issues with CiviMail settings for the new server, of course, but we'll work through those.

Many activity records, initially thought there was a bug with conversion, but after comparing to the new system, they were on the old system, will have to figure out how to trim.

Dashboard - never understood this, guess we'll have to figure out what it is for.

Various indexes may have to be created.

- - - - we are testing with our data on version 4.0.5 - pretty cool.

Maybe I'll group my observations by day.

Good changes
We've had a serious problem with duplicates being added to our 1.9 system, just discovered on the New Individual a robust effort to identify possible duplicates with the 4.0.5 system - very nice improvement.

The basic contact search function is much more flexible - looking for first name, last name, email in the basic search box

Only admin user seems to have users (now called) "people" authority:

Items we miss from v 1.9
I really liked that the logged on username was displayed in the left column.  I know the users logged on are displayed at the bottom, but for admins sometimes logged in with admin and also our user account.  Only an issue for admin I suppose, so probably not a big deal.

You are using Drupal, right? Just go to /admin/build/block and add the "Who's Online" block to the appropriate region (sidebar first?) and make sure to specify if you want it to only be displayed for certain roles.
