Can I use "limit listings to a specific Group" in a profile w advanced search?

I have created a profile and set the advanced setting, "limit listings to a specific group", to be one of the smart groups I have created in my groups manager.

When I do an advanced search and set the view to be the profile that I have created, the result set is not limited by the smart group associated with the profile in the view.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the meaning of "limit listings to a specific group"? I was expecting that my result set would be limited based on the smart group criteria associated with the profile.

Hi,

That option is only applied when you are using the profile as a profile (to generate "front end" listings). the url is civicrm/profile/list?gid=xxx&force=1 If recall properly (or check out the documentation if my memory fails me)

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC40/How+to+Create+Profiles seems to indicate that his field can be used for "Automatically limit search listings to certain Groups"

Perhaps this means that only contacts in certain groups can use this profile?

Russ - why not just set the Adv Search to include the Smart Group you want rather than trying via Profile which I think is the wrong application of Profile - the 'limit listing to a group' is when you want to display a public listing eg 'our current members' and therefore limit the list of contacts being shown to only those in the group

@petednz - The reason is because I'm actually trying to find the intersection of two smart groups.

I posted another question on that over at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,21412.0.html which lobo seems to have answered.

I've now got a good grip on what profiles can and can't be used for. Thanks.
