Event sign-up not capturing email address

On a Joomla site, using Civi 3.4.8. I created the most basic kind of event, with no profiles, and no multiple sign-ups. If you register for it and you already have a contact record, fine, you get added and the event is added to your record. If you aren't in the database already, you enter your email address and register - a contact record does get created but it's entirely blank, i.e. not saving the email address.

If I add a profile to the event, to capture name, for example, then that info is saved, but still not the email address.

I know there are posts on the forum about this happening when multiple sign-ups are turned on (see: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=12028.0) but this is happening without that option turned on. Very odd.

I assume that there's something weird going on that someone else has done on the site, but just wondering if anyone's got any bright ideas about this.

It would be really great if anyone had any ideas at all about this. I've just noticed that if you create a contact in Civi, the dropdown next to the email address field is set to 'Alternative email'. This seems weird and possibly relevant?
