CiviCase configuration UI
August 27, 2012, 06:52:35 am
We have done without a CiviCase configuration UI for toooo long.

I think that the XML is making it much harder for the average user to get started with CiviCase and preventing its evolution.

How much $$$ do you think this will take?

Also, we hear that they are more likely to succeed when they have seed funding so, any of you guys up for joining me in seed funding?

I agree with you on this.  I have also put off working with CiviCase for now because after initially trying to set it up, I found it rather a challenge.

Thanks for the input.

One of the things I have realised after setting it up a couple of times, which makes it harder that you might at first suspect is that as well as having to learn XML you have to:

1) interpret / understand what makes a logical and valid CiviCase XML document before you start. - i.e know the answer to questions like 'can a timeline be set to only appear once in a case' which would be obvious from a UI

2) Keep the XML document up to date with your database (when you change the name of an activity in your DB, you have to change it in the XML document.

I would disagree with point 2 - there's a name and a label field. If you only change the label you don't have to change both places (earlier versions had bugs that confused this, but that's how it was supposed to work).

But don't disagree with the idea of a UI, although some people's preferences were voiced in the comments here:

Would a gadget that assisted in the writing of the XML be a worthwhile intermediate step? That would be fairly easy to knock up as a standalone component.

Ive done an entry on this for the Cookbook. I didn't really have too much problems with the setup as it is. I don't think learning xml is a requirement. I just copied and pasted from a sample and read the documentation properly.

BUT a UI would be much better because

a. they just are and

b. would make very immediate how powerful CiviCase is in so many different situations.

I just did a HR system for a client in 15 minutes. They were knocked out.

Tony:

1. Would be great if you can post more detail about the HR system that you built for a client, and attach the civicase configuration files

2. Yes, a UI would be good and definitely worth it. CiviCase is getting a lot of traction and i suspect a UI would help it gain traction even faster. However as with many things, a lot of people have expressed a desire for it, but no one has volunteered to fund or build it :(

I agree that creating a UI for the CiviCase setup is really important. We will be happy to undertake, but we can' t afford to do it without any funding. Should we stick it on the Make-It-Happen list?

Yes - you have any idea about how long this will take and how much it would cost?

Not out of the top of my head, I will make an estimate, description and put it on for MIH approval. It goes on the wiki right?

Erik or Michael, just wanting to ping this thread since I think an MIH for CiviCase Config UI is a good idea, but I don't see one on the http://civicrm.org/content/make-it-happen page.

While agreement is great, we'll need to have a couple of seed sponsors that can help get this going before it becomes an MIH

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a MIH?  I thought the MIH was to allow the community to join together with a little bit of money each to make it less of a burden on just a few orgs to sponsor the work.
