Joomla : Can CiviEvents display in a Calendar?
May 13, 2008, 01:49:23 pm
I happen to be looking at different event/calendar modules (for Joomla). Is what I see on the Drupal demo possible through Joomla (eg. Displaying CiviEvents in a calendar)?

Thanks in advance,
John

P.S. Taboo Info : I am using CiviCRM 2.0.3 with Joomla 1.5!   :o

I apologize...I previously posted this question in the CiviContribute - just as an additional question in my post. Didn't mean to cross-post, just figured it belonged here.

we integrate with the drupal calendar module via the CiviEvent iCal feed. so if there is a joomla component / mambot that can accept an iCal url, you should be able to use that with CiviEvent

I haven't had time to try it - summer project 8) - but this commercial calendar with Joomla support also sounds like it accepts ical feeds: http://www.extrosoft.com/About/Thyme/Features/

There is a Joomla Component for iCal... http://gcalendar.allon.ch/content/

It has modules to display the latest events, etc.

I will try to display the ical from CiviCRM and let you guys know the results.

That would be good to know...I'm working on a modification to JCalPro, and it's getting to be a lot of work...I'd prefer not to have to do anything manually as far as the iCal file goes, though...if that's possible...I know there are other calendars that do that.

OK,

The gCalendar Joomla! Component works but if you are like me and you are using the registration application, CiviEvent cannot display the registration button on the Google Calendar page.

For those of you using Joomla 1.5 and would like to use Google Calendar with CiviEvent 2.1 here are my steps:
  • Create a Google Calendar Account
  • Under the MyCalendar section, use Settings in order to create as many calendars as you need (i.e. if you would like to have more than one category)
  • Make sure to make PUBLIC each calendar that you would like to share... see the tab "Share this Calendar"
  • Go to CiviEvent and create all the events that you need
  • Once you are done press Manage Events to select the Calendar that you would like to display and click on the ical to save the ics file
  • Login into your Google account once again, and find the drop down option "Add" on the bottom left side. Select "Import Calendar"
  • Choose the ical file, select which calendar (if you have more than one category), and press Import
  • Now click on the "Settings" option of your Google calendar
  • Go to the Calendar Settings, and select the calendar that you would like to use
  • Press the "Customize the color, size, and other options"
  • Write down the URL section of the code
  • Go back to Joomla and create a new menu with the Wrapper option
  • Select the width and height, paste the URL from the embed option

You will need to perform the ical import procedure everytime you update your calendar... if anybody knows how to skip this last step please let me know. I believe it's also possible to display a Joomla! module (wrapper) as well as a list of the latest events page using the CiviEvent "Manage Events" links functions, just remember to remove the administrator from the generated URL...

Any specific reason you are not using the "Add by URL" feature of google calendar and give it the CiviCRM iCal url? this should eliminate the need to upload the ical file whenever u add/remove an event

Thanks for the quick reply. I did not know that was an option... I just tried with this ical URL and got this error message

Failed to import calendar from "http://www.ohewear.com/joomla/index2.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/ical&reset=1&page=1"

It accepted the URL but it did not displayed any data ??? ... Strange since the import option is working fine.

I will review the format of the ical output which is:

seems like we managed to break google calendar integration with 2.1. I'm taking a look and will fix before beta4

Re: Joomla : Can CiviEvents display in a Calendar?

For those of you that would like to use Joomla! ical component (http://gcalendar.allon.ch/content/) the component comes with a Latest Events Module, but it displays event information from Google Calendar and not from CiviCRM events.

In my particular case, I need to display registration for each event, so I have to use the CiviCRM event description rather than the google calendar's description. I hacked a little the RSS feed to create a RSS NEW Joomla Module with the latest events and then I put it on a new template.

This is the modified RSS that I used, just paste this code on your CiviCRM template folder:

directory and file: yourtemplatefolder/CRM/Core/Calendar/Rss.tpl

Code: [Select]

{ts}Latest Events{/ts}

{$config->userFrameworkBaseURL}

{ts}Listing of current and upcoming free workshops.{/ts}

{foreach from=$events key=uid item=event}

{$event.title|escape:'htmlall'}

{if $event.start_date}{$event.start_date|crmDate}{if $event.end_date} {ts}through{/ts} {strip}
        {* Only show end time if end date = start date *}
        {if $event.end_date|date_format:"%Y%m%d" == $event.start_date|date_format:"%Y%m%d"}
            {$event.end_date|date_format:"%I:%M %p"}
        {else}
            {$event.end_date|crmDate}
        {/if}{/strip}
    {/if}
{/if}
{if $event.summary}{$event.summary|escape:'htmlall'}
{/if}
{if $event.description}{$event.description|escape:'htmlall'}
{/if}

{if $event.is_show_location EQ 1 && $event.location}{ts}Where{/ts}: {$event.location|escape:'htmlall'}
{/if}

{if $event.event_type}

{/if}
{if $event.contact_email}

{/if}

{/foreach}

You need to create an RSS feed module on your Joomla! location and set the parameters that you need to display this feed. The URL is the one displayed from your "Manage Events" page on CiviCRM.

This is how the module will look:
(http://www.californiaenergycenter.org/images/stories/marketing/events_civic.jpg)

The only problem is that RSS links open in a new window... I am not sure if there is a way to change this behavior.

Hope this help someone looking for a Joomla Calendar module...

For those using Joomla looking for a module for the events.

I managed to integrate the RSS module with a nice Joomla Module that allows you to have internal RSS links... On the Joomla Extensions SLICK RSS did the trick for me!
