Trouble with CiviCRM on new Joomla install
July 24, 2008, 04:45:08 pm
I'm trying to install CiviCRM on a brand new Joomla 1.5.4 Stable install. The only other component currently installed is joomlaXplorer, which I used to unpack CiviCRM.

Please understand that I'm soooo not a programmer, and I'm grasping at straws trying to draw this project together in my free time. I thought perhaps y'all (yes... texan drawl there) could help me out?

Minimum System Requirements: check

Tried the install a couple of ways. First was uploading it and unpacking it with joomlaXplorer. It reports 2 errors, but doesn't do me the honor of detailing the errors. So after the first 50 tries, I move on to unpacking the file locally and uploading via FTP. This creates a few more problems, as my host (unlimitedmb.com) does not allow particular file extensions to free accounts, including .sample and .htaccess.

However, since Joomla behaved just fine without the .htaccess files (my host said they were unnecessary anyway  >:(), I pressed on.

I've pointed the installer to the correct directory (hope that earns me some brownie points)... and get a time out message.

Since I can't upload any .htaccess files, I'm trying the php.ini method. I think my first concern is: what should my php.ini file contain? Not just the 2 lines that are given multiple times on the forum, but are there other format or command lines I know nothing about? Would someone be kind enough to link to an actual php.ini file (or is that a no no?  :-X)?

Anyway, I created a php.ini file with just the 2 lines adding more time and copy it into the root folder along with the awesome little replicator file (COMPLETE!) just to make sure it gets where it needs to be.

To my surprise, my host didn't auto-delete the files, so I try the install again... and guess what?

That's right... timed out. *sigh*

native Joomla support for v2.0.x does jnot exist. We get that with 2.1. You need to look at this thread.

Sounds like you also need to tweak php's max_execution_time. Search the forum for how to.

If the problem was with native support vs. legacy support in Joomla 1.5, you would have received an error message. A timeout message or blank screen indicates your php settings (max_execution_time and memory_limit) are not sufficient to install the software (as you've already presumed).

Re: php.ini --
It should be sufficient to have just those two settings in your php.ini file. A local php.ini overrides the default settings, so you don't need to replicate all the settings -- just the ones you're overriding. You should run phpinfo() or look in the system info menu item under Joomla to make sure the revised settings are registering in php.

I put together some manual install directions in this post:

No guarantees. But it's another option that may work for you. Given the persistence of the timeout message on your hosting servers, you may run into issues post-installation anyway.
