NOVICE HELP - Please enter a package directory
September 04, 2008, 03:29:44 pm
Hi

Like everyone else, I have been waiting for a version of CIVICRM that was compatible with Joomla 1.5.3.  However, I have scoured this forum for all possible solutions, and all of them keep generating the same message in the subject line.  I am trying to install the Alpha Release, 2.1

I have followed the installation instructions to the tee, and have even gone to the troubles of manually extracting the package into its different directories, but I am still getting message.  I am aware that this message is usually indicative of an incorrect path, but once again, I have gone to the log path bit and made sure it was the correct path, but still no joy.

Here are my stats:
PHP Built on:  Linux web171.extendcp.co.uk 2.6.9-67.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Nov 7 13:58:04 EST 2007 i686
Database Version:  5.0.67-community
Database Collation:  utf8_general_ci
PHP Version:  5.2.5
Web Server:  Apache/2
Web Server to PHP interface:  cgi
Joomla! Version:  Joomla! 1.5.3 Production/Stable [ Vahi ] 22-April-2008 22:00 GMT
User Agent:  Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.0.04506; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 3.5.21022)

My host is Heart Internet.............

I don't want to sound too desperate, but I run an event planning business and I am currently using SugarCRM which I am not happy with as it is slow cumbersome, and difficult to access for my partners outside the UK.  CivicCRM would be the perfect solution for me as I would be able to access all information from one site, so it is really important that I get this.  I am fairly good with technical stuff, but I think on this occasion, I need someone to talk me through this step by step, please...............................

I am really begging, please help.....................

1) Upload CiviCRM Joomla package to /public_html/tmp/ directory
2) Unzip package
3) From within Joomla, go to Extensions > Install
4) In the "install from directory" field, enter:

/home/sites/ACCOUNTNAME/public_html/tmp/com_civicrm/

5) Replace "ACCONTNAME" with your account username with the host. Click install.

Note that the directory location above *appears* to be the directory structure they use, based on a quick look at their website. But I don't know for sure.

Thank you so much.....................it worked.  I would never have figured that out without your help.  Before I disappear, I am trying to now change my Resource URL so that my CSS settings work, and the panel looks tidy, but it is not working.  I have once again looked on the forum and most solutions seem to be for Drupal, and the Online Documentation gives Drupal examples as well:

This is the URL I am putting

http://zarmani-events.com/home/sites/public_html/home/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/css/

and I have also tried

 http://www.zarmani-events.com/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/

(assuming joomla is installed in your root public_html directory)

Should be:
http://zarmani-events.com/home/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/

(you have joomla installed in a subdirectory)

Am new to all of this but having same trouble, through Netfirms.  I have, I think, entered the complete path, but get the "please enter package directory result."  Could there be any other reason the directory would not be registering?

I unzipped on my hard drive, then loaded to server through Filezilla, as this was suggested my Netfirms.  Going to try again later today.  Would it have made a difference that I loaded Filezilla client rather than Filezilla server?  I loaded client, for no good reason other than I don't know what I'm doing yet.  Thanks for your help on this.

Client is fine.
Joomla isn't finding the installation package -- which either means you're not putting the location in correctly (should be full directory from root) or the package files aren't correctly unpacked/uploaded. Those are pretty much the only scenarios creating that error.

Hi Brian,
Wonder you can help me in this. I recently tried using the Import Contacts in CiviCRM2.2/Joomla1.5.9 from a .csv file.
To overcome the JSON.PHP error, I commented the lines 321 and 332 in Parser.php. It was able to import around 120 contacts though with DB error. However 2nd time its unable to import around 1008 contacts.
This error happens after the step 3

    * √1. Choose Data Source     * √2. Match Fields    * »3. Preview    * 4. Summary
which generates following 500 Internal Server Error.

___________________________________________________________________________
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Wonder if you have some hint in this regard...

Cheers,

Not sure about this one. It's possible you have some errant data in your import file that's messing up the import (special characters, etc.). Make sure the file you're importing was exported from whatever previous system you had using UTF-8. If it still throws an error, try chopping up the import file into smaller chunks to try to isolate where the problem is.

Re: NOVICE HELP - Please enter a package directory

Ok, well...

The text "JOOMLA_ROOT" was supposed to be replaced with the actual location of your Joomla installation. Not relative to your public directory -- the actual full directory location on the server. It looks as though you actually installed Joomla into a "JOOMLA_ROOT" subdirectory, which is a little weird.

If you're getting the "enter package directory" error, it's because you haven't located the full directory location of the Civi files (it does look like you've uploaded and unpacked them correctly, so the problem is just locating the directory).

Try going to extensions > install from within Joomla.
You may have a default directory located in the "install from directory" text box that ends in "/tmp"

Replace /tmp with /administrator/components/com_installer/com_civicrm/
and try to install.
