CiviCRM Upgrade from 1.3 to Current Version: Contacts Question
December 03, 2008, 11:26:47 am
Hello All!  First I want to say thank you for all the excellent info in these forums.  I've been able to successfuly install CiviCRM 2 on a Drupal server with little trouble thanks to your contributions.

Currently, I'm stuck at a data problem.  I need to migrate the data from a CiviCRM 1.3 DB to CiviCRM 2.   From 1.3, I can (and have) exported all contact information for Individuals and Organizations, but I lose contact tags, groups, contribution info, etc.  I don't want to re-enter all that info for 5000+ contacts, but I've been unsuccessful in trying to find a way to back up or export my complete data.  Every time I try to run the "Backup" process from within 1.3's GUI, I get an error saying the PHP script isn't found (even though I know it's there). I can't find a clean way to export from PHPMyAdmin, but that just may be my lack of PHP saavy rather than a real issue.  I just want my data in tact.

It doesn't seem like it should be this difficult, but I'm stuck nontheless.

Is there any possible way to move my data, in tact, from 1.3 to 2.0?

Well, the normal way to do that would be to successively apply each of the upgrade SQL scripts to get to 1.9, then install 2.0 and run its upgrade process.  If you have any user-defined activities you need to protect their history since 1.9->2.0 doesn't convert it automatically.

So why do you need to export contacts?

Thank you for your post and I was wondering if you solved your issue of how to convert the group information.

We are on 1.9 and it does seem like a huge task to install each version.  We will certainly do this on a separate server, but even then the production database changes every day, so we have to get the process down.

I can't help thinking that we converted from our old CRM system a year and a half ago from .csv files, so it might be possible to load to CiviCRM 2.2 or 2.3 from 1.9 exports.  Exports of Contacts, Memberships and Contribution are available, but I haven't tried loading back in to a test environment.

Here is my similar post.
