Last effort Joomla and Go Daddy
March 09, 2009, 10:32:55 pm
Well I have been reading everywhere to find a way to install this program. Using the demo it does everything I need it to do and more. However it seems pretty ridiculous to me to install.

I use GoDaddy as my host provider and Joomla for my website. I have manually unzipped the civicrm files into
administrator/component/com_installer/civicrm when I go to install from directory in the Joomla install/unistall i keep getting a message asking for a package directory.

I am very new to this whole thing and I have a very limited knowledge. Some of the solutions involve changing php.ini files etc. Is there any simple solution to get this program installed? If not I suppose i have to find something else.

Civi is a pretty good-sized and resource demanding piece of software. The hosting platform that you use will make a difference in how easy it is to install, and how well it will perform. To make an analogy -- if you install the current version of Adobe Photoshop on a five-year old, middle of the road computer, and expect to do high end work with it, you shouldn't be surprised if you run into problems installing and running the software.

GoDaddy shared hosting is middle of the road, at best (and I'm being generous). So you shouldn't be surprised if you run into installation problems and poor performance when running more resource-demanding software like CiviCRM.

It also is a good idea to do searches of the forums before posting. There has been a lot of discussion about GoDaddy hosting, the problems inherent with it, and ideas for workarounds. Further, the specific message you're getting (can't find the package directory) is a simple and common problem: you haven't put the correct location of the unzipped civicrm files in the Joomla install from directory field. You need the full directory location -- not the the public html-relative location.

The recommended changes to php.ini help improve performance. It's possible you may not even be able to install without making those changes. Unfortunately, the GoDaddy resource defaults are inordinately low.

Fair Enough,

I have read many forums and I am sorry I am very confused. I suppose maybe I shouldn't be doing this at all, considering my level of knowledge and experience. I haven't even gotten to the point of poor performance, I can't get past installing the software. It looks like I founds the right directory, now I am getting the following error

"Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/home/content/r/o/c/rockkelowna/html/administrator/components/com_civicrm"

I can't seem to find this error message in the forums either. I would really appriciate some help here.

That results from an existing failed installation. Joomla can't install it because it recognizes at least a partial existing installation of CiviCRM. You'll need to go into FTP or a file manager and delete the administrator/components/com_civicrm and components/com_civicrm folders, then try reinstalling.

Ok, I deleted those directories and loaded them up again. Back in the Joomla install extension I tried to install from directory and got the following messages

        * Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/home/content/r/o/c/rockkelowna/html/components/com_civicrm"
        * Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/home/content/r/o/c/rockkelowna/html/administrator/components/com_civicrm"

It would seem they weren't completely deleted. Both directories must be removed.

well I have just got to say. For a program that is supposed to be for a non-profit groups, this installation is way too tough. non-profit usually means you have volunteers doing everything and little to no budgets to hire IT professionals to work on stuff like this. If my problem is using a host like GoDaddy, which again groups with low budgets would tend to use, I find this whole thing very frustrating. I used the demo and this is exactly the program i need. It is really too bad, I can't get the right help or find the right solution to this problem.

sorry about your install issues. I've added a warning to potential users on this page: http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Joomla+Installation+Guide

at this point, we recommend folks try other hosting providers or get a better hosting plan

The problems you're experiencing are not exactly CiviCRM related. This is a standard install method for Joomla, especially when the installation is large (and therefore feature-rich).

Yep, GoDaddy is inexpensive. It's the WalMart of the Web. You get what you pay for. Nothing wrong with that if it fits your needs.

But if you install a complex community management system (CiviCRM) on top of a complex application framework (Joomla), on top of a complex scripting language (PHP), backed up by a complex database (MySQL), you have to expect some trouble if you also want it all fast, easy and cheap. You rarely get more than two of three. Note that 'high-quality', 'highly-secure', 'high-performance', and 'highly-dependable' are not even on that list. For that you just plain have to pay. Luckily it doesn't cost much more to get a great increase in quality.

I agree with wanting to minimize the total cost of ownership, especially when you want to at least trial it.

I am actually running CiviCRM on ICDSoft.  I had trouble installing it but I submitted a ticket to their 24-hour support desk and they found the problem and got it installed for me.  The seem to have really good support and they are inexpensive like GoDaddy (about $6 per month I think - see banner at bottom of www.Signals.tv).

I hope this helps.

I would also like to recommend BlueHost.  I've got not one or two, but nearly 10 domains all hosted on one account and rarely have issues with the resources.  I have CiviCRM installed and working fine, too.

Here is the feature setup: http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html

They have 24/7 phone, email, & trouble ticket support, all for about 7 bucks a month.  The only drawback for me was they have no way to create/modify CNAME records other than through Technical Support, but most people won't have an issue with that.
