View only Profile fields in Profile 'edit' mode
June 23, 2010, 05:29:04 pm
Hi - this issue seems to have been raised here - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=12202.0

The feature that used to be available was to make a Profile that could be used by existing contacts to update their data - but using 'View Only' and 'Public Pages' meant that some field content could be 'displayed' but editable.

This was great, especially when using checksums, as you could direct people to a form that showed their 'name' but did not let them edit it - a safety net for people clicking on a checksum that belonged to another family member, or that had been fwded to them. We would then provlde instructions ie 'if the name below is not yours, you need to go here .... If the name is yours but needs to be changed, eg due to error or name change, then please put your new name in the text fields below' - and we provided a text field for that.

So this all worked really well and is used by several clients in pre 3.0 - and I am just setting up same for other clients in 3.x - but the 'view only' setting causes the field to not be displayed at all.

This thread http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=10078.0 suggests that this may have been a deliberate change to deal with a separate issue with some unanticipated consequences. Or maybe we were just benefitting from a set up that was not intended.

whichever, i think there is huge value in being able to display some contact's info to them in a profile which they cannot edit, along with other fields that they can update.

Can I flag this as a JIRA issue - or is there something I am missing?

yes it does seem to behave as expected in 3.2 - timeline for stable?
