Not processing bounces
February 22, 2012, 04:05:26 pm
I can send an email out via CiviMail with the following settings:

Name: return
Server: imap.googlemail.com
Username: return@example.com
Password: (return's password for Google Apps)
Localpart: return+
Email domain: example.com
Return-Path: (leave blank)
Protocol: IMAP
Source: (leave blank)
Use SSL?: tick the box
Default Option?: Bounce Processing

I made up a junk address to send the mail to, and the bounce returned into the inbox of my return address.  I ran ran the processor under Settings - Scheduled Jobs and it seems to have ran successfully.

The processor successfully accessed my gmail return address, and it moved the bounced email to a folder it created: "inbox/civimail/processed".  All seems good except that in the report in CiviMailer it does not show that as having been a bounced address.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Teak

I am about 5 weeks behind on a mailing I really want to get out, but this is a first mailing so I know there are going to be a ton of dirty addresses.  I want to get this working before I send the message out, so any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Sounds weird, if it can move the email you are pretty far down the line. Could you try add debug messages in the code and try finding where it get confused?

Tip: you can move back the message to inbox using gmail interface and process it again.

Thanks for the reply.  I do not know how to code in the error handling. I could try.... :(

Are there any settings that I might be missing?  I am just having a heck of a time with the CiviMailer.  I know it's good software and powerful, but I just need to push over this hump to make it utilitarian.

I'm having the same problems - emailprocessor.php is doing everything except marking the bouncing address as 'on hold'. Incredibly frustrating - right now we're paying for our client to use Mail Chimp because we can't have 100s of bouncing email addresses clogging our mail server and endangering the server's mail reputation.

This install is:

Joomla 1.7.3
CiviCRM 4.0.8
Apache version   1.3.42
PHP version   5.2.17
MySQL version   5.0.92-community

@penguintrax,

Could you help us help you? We need someone that has the problem to track down where the problems happen and debug.

The easiest to debug is to use imap, because then it's just a matter from dragging the processed email from the processed folder back to inbox and run the process again.

We are keen to fix the problem, but we will need your help to find where the problem is.

I'm having the same issue with Drupal 6 installation with 4.1.0

I have opened an issue already: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-9796

If you want me to debug, I can be available on IRC.

Just picking up on Lobo's hard and soft bounces note here http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-9796

What is the difference between a hard and soft bounce?

I'm doing a set up using 4.1 on D7 and using a Gmail pop account as my bounced mail mailbox.

I'm finding that when I send out a CiviMail to addresses that I know will bounce, the bounces get returned to the Gmail box correctly.

When I run Fetch Bounced emails the messages certainly disappear - so something is going on - but the related contact does not have Email on hold set.

Am I missing something or is there a different behaviour?

Further to this I just set the whole thing up on the Civi demo site.

Theres a group called Bounce with a user who definitely has a bounce-able email address

Ive sent out a mailing and run the bounce processor.

It processes the bounce but does not alter the contact record.
