Introductions: Hello world (or at least the UK bit of it)
July 01, 2008, 02:26:54 pm
Thanks for setting this up.
Introducing myself - based in Cornwall (near Plymouth). Currently building my first CiviCRM based system - a membership and campaign management system for SW Region Green Party. I am on the Joomla side of the community here (running several Joomla based sites so fairly heavily committed to the J-way.

Hoping others in the UK will introduce themselves here and that someone is organising a meet in Bristol fairly soon.

Hi - Just thought I would introduce myself too!

Name is Phil - based on Tyneside. I am working on a membership database for the British Isles bit of the Industrial Workers of the World - "a Union"  - I am using Drupal. www.iww.org.uk

I have been a CRM user in a previous existence - but very much a novice with the technical issues - with php and mysql etc etc.

My normal questions tend to be how do I do that?

My quote would definitely be "fools rush in where angels fear to tread"

Hi All

Have been lurking for a little while - now time to put head above parapet......

I'm the newly appointed Head of UK Fundraising for EMMS-Nazareth www.emms-nazareth.org

The web site will be moving to Drupal shortly.......

Whilst the health-care work we support in Nazareth (Israel) has been going since 1861, we are in effect brand new as a charity seeking support in the UK, so I am designing constituent-relationship workflows and processes ab initio as well as working out how best to make use of CiviCRM as a back-office tool.

Delighted that Michael has stepped forward to help CiviCRM move forward.

I just signed up here and thought I'd say hello.

I'm a freelance web developer working with nonprofits, mostly doing stuff with xhtml, css, WordPress, PHP, IBM web content management etc.

Am particularly interested in how CiviCRM can be used (in conjunction with Drupal) to meet the CRM needs of CVS and other infrastructure organisations. These organisations have a mix of database, CRM and website needs that I believe CiviCRM solves better than many other products and I'm interested in how it can be used, promoted and further developed.

I've been living in Melbourne, Australia for the last year - but for the previous six years I ran a circuit rider project in West London.

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd just introduce myself. I work for GreenNet, a London-based ISP and web development collective, doing user support and web development.

We've been using Drupal as our main CMS platform for the last 4 years or so, and have used the combination of Drupal and CiviCRM in building a number of sites.

CiviCRM is a great system with a wide range of functionality. However, we have found that it is sometimes difficult to customise or otherwise localise for UK-based users and organisations.

Best wishes,
-Ian

Hi all,

just following up Michael's post-meetup email and saying hello on the forum. It was good to meet you all in London - looking forward to the next UK meeting and happy to host something in Bristol again if that works for people.

Circle Interactive have been working with CiviCRM for about 3 years or more now - we've done installs that are focused on bringing people into contact with orgs and managing communications with them and others that are more about fundraising. Always happy to help with advice although I should admit that we don't hang out on IRC enough. Will try to do that more.

Cheers

My name is Jamie and I'm a student of Physics with Philosophy at the University of Manchester. I used to work with a bunch of people on a community-based church website. Recently we've been employed by a Thai Boxing company to build a community-based website as the hub of the various things this company will try and achieve. (So yes, currently we don't work with non-profits!). Currently its just a CMS but the community side of things will come (hopefully)

With our team I want to slowly develop into a company to build an open-source community-driven website building package for churches. Currently I feel that most of the software currently on the market is aimed at building online brochures, rather then connecting real people (which seems obvious for people to do). Secondly most of the best stuff for churches is prioprietry and costs money, which I think is pointless.

Until then our aim is to build good websites for company's cheaply by utilising open-source software. The flipside (especially as we're all students) is that our aim is to use the tasks and features that they pay us to build, to build back into the software which we're using. So hopefully we're be around for a while. (One thing that upsets me is how many awesome open-source project ideas only have one developer, totally not taking advantage of collaboration which is what I think is particularly cool about open-source (not just that its free)

Hi Jamie

Welcome!

Thought you might be interested to know that you’re not the only Christian around interested in Civi...... I’m using it internally for my charity. As we build a relationally-oriented (rather than product-oriented) supporter base, it will be a key tool.

In terms of what interests you specifically, you should hook up with civi user FatherShawn – he uses teh system for for managing his flock in the USA. He’s a very active member of the community.

Hey guys.

For those of you I haven't already met, I'm Nic and I'm Head of Technology at a digital agency in Bristol called Enable Interactive http://www.enableinteractive.co.uk.

We work with lots of NGOs and non-profits from small, regional groups through to the big internationals - such as WWF, Scope, The British Red Cross and Breast Cancer Care.

As an agency, we're tech agnostic, which means we use a wide range of systems including free and open source stuff all the way through to the enterprise market.

Having said that, we do a lot of work with Drupal and CiviCRM because it tends to be such a great fit for non-profits. As such, we've built up considerable Drupal and CiviCRM expertise over the years and have a passionate development team of real experts!

Personally, I'm interested in how we can use technologies like CiviCRM for social change and I'm really excited to be part of such a great movement.

I may have met some of you recently at the NetTuesday event where I joined Michael McAndrew in giving a presentation on CiviCRM. If not, hopefully I'll meet some of you at the upcoming events, such as DrupalCon Paris. Are any of you going to that?

Our team would also like to host a future UK CiviCRM forum meet at our offices in Bristol. I'll be working with Michael to get that sorted :-)

you can follow me on twitter at twitter.com/nicrodgers or add me to your LinkedIn network from my public profile at http://www.linkedin.com/in/nicrodgers

Look forward to meeting you all soon..

I volunteer for a local charity in Dorset and manage their IT and Website. I have installed the Drupal version of CiviCRM (on a Ubuntu local server) mainly to start using CiviCase but am struggling (with both) with the concepts at the moment. I can see the application for the other (main) modules though. I do post a bit on the CiviCase project. We want to use this to keep simple records of client contact but Case does not have the ability to record their address details or have sub categories. Anyone know when 2.3 is due?

I had thought of using the Joomla! version but baulked at the idea of administrator access for users.

If anyone is using CiviCase and would like to exchange ideas, etc. input welcome.

Hi Happy Hacker - I'm based in London but was working in Bristol today so we aren't too far away.  Do you fancy coming along to our next South West meet up?

You might have thought of this already given that you have been posting on the CiviCase forums, but for a simple history of client contact, you could just use activities (the built in meeting phone call and email might suffice or create your own)

you should use the a contact record to record address details.

or have sub categories

what do you mean?  maybe ask this one on the CiviCase forum

Never :) it is called 3.0 now.

that would definitley be possible at our next meet up.

Yes, I would consider it, Dorchester - we have a room and facilities?
you could just use activities (the built in meeting phone call and email might suffice or create your own)
Like "New case for new client" that does not seem to have a address fields?
you should use the a contact record to record address details.
That surely means opening another screen to do that after the client case has been recorded?
what do you mean?  maybe ask this one on the CiviCase forum
We have Enquiry codes e.g. HEALTH the a following number of reasons within that and would like to tick "Health" and then say "i. Hospitals". If it is stored in this way it gives more control options later.
Never,  it is called 3.0 now.
Great!, anyone know when it is due as I undestand from one of my previous posts the address facility will be present (hopefully as a CRM wide feature on forms)?

Hi,

Contact and activity/case is a two screen process - no way to get around that in 2.x.  Create the contact first then the activity.  In 3.0 it is effectively a one step process.  Check out http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/activity?action=add&reset=1&context=standalone

Have a look on the blog for details of the 3.0 release schedule.

Re the enquiry codes, I think you need to write a more detailed use case on the CiviCase forum.

Great - thanks for the offer of a room.

Michael

Well, assuming that the Sandbox is the release 3, I did register & logon there and:

1. there is no Civicase link. So I can't seem to create a new Case.
2. There are no address fields in the new activity form (just "Location"). I want address as in "Create New Individual" on that form.
3. I could not find CiviCase. I wonder if the CiviCase module loaded on to that system.

I will try to find the posting area for comments to that release.

Sorry, this response is in the wrong forums. Admin please delete as necessary.
